The mechanical weed control (curry-comb) was done before sowing on all plots. Therefore sowing time II had 2 and time III had 3 times a curry-comb application before and at sowing. The begin of flowering of the crops at the three sowing times happened about at the same time because of the enormous dryness in spring. This year there was no lodging because of the lower height of the plants.

The sowing date III had significantly lower yield than sowing date I and II (Newman-Keuls-Test; alpha = 0,05). The first sowing time at the beginning of april seems to be the best under these pedoclimatic conditions. Weed control does not influence significantly the yield of the tested varieties.

All varieties show the influence of sowing date on yield, which is significantly higher at first and second sowing than on third. The variety C has significantly lower yield than A and E (Newman-Keuls-Test; alpha = 0,05). The variety E seems to develop the highest yield, but is significantly not higher then A

At all varieties sowing time III has significantly lower yield than sowing I and II.

The date of sowing determined the height of the plants, which seems to be correlated with the yield. The variety E with the highest yield was the shortest of all tested varieties. The height of the plants obviously is negatively correlated with the seed yield.

The herbicide has good effect on weed appearence compared to curry-comb at all sowing times, the later the better. The curry-comb-application, which was never used after sowing, is comparable to herbicide at sowing I and has the badest controlling effect at sowing III.

After harvest there was almost no emergence of shatting (volunteer) seeds on the plots of curry-comb, compared to the herbicide plots. The reason can be the lower shatting tendency in those plots because of about 5 to 10% higher water content of the seed. The the seed with herbicide application have lower water content and therefore higher shatting tendency.
